There is also evidence that individuals with ASD have abnormal preferences for interpersonal distance (IPD), including both standing too close or preferring more distance relative to TD peers ( Kennedy and Adolphs, 2014 Lough et al., 2015 Perry et al., 2015). There is also significant prevalence of sensory dysfunction in ASD ( Rogers et al., 2003 Kern et al., 2006 Tomchek and Dunn, 2007 Ben-Sasson et al., 2009), and these hyper- and/or hypo- sensory sensitivities may further contribute to atypical patterns of social interaction.Ĭompared to typically developing (TD) peers, children with ASD tend to interact less with other children ( Corbett et al., 2010, 2012) and engage in less cooperative play ( Corbett et al., 2014b), instead showing a preference to engage in self-play ( Humphrey and Symes, 2011). It may be this exaggerated stress response that drives, in part, reductions in social engagement. For example, there is considerable evidence that social interactions are highly stressful for children with ASD ( Lopata et al., 2008 Corbett et al., 2010). Underlying physiological factors may also impact the extent to which individuals with ASD engage with others in social situations. Impaired social communication is a primary characteristic of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) ( American Psychiatric Association, 2013) and may be the result of limitations in social cognition (e.g., Baron-Cohen, 1995) or social motivation ( Chevallier et al., 2012). Results are discussed in a broader context, emphasizing the need to examine relationships between social, behavioral, and physiological profiles in ASD to enhance understanding and improve treatments aimed at ameliorating stress and sensory dysfunction, while enhancing social skills. Furthermore, diagnosis was a significant moderator of the relation between cortisol and SSP, at multiple time points during the PIP ( p < 0.05).Ĭonclusions: The current study extends previous findings by showing that higher physiological arousal during play is associated with heightened sensory sensitivity and a pattern of increased stress in various contexts. Cortisol during play was negatively correlated with scores on the SSP ( r = −0.242, p = 0.03), and positively correlated with SSS ( r = 0.273, p = 0.02) indicating that higher cortisol was associated with greater sensory sensitivity (lower SSP reflects more impairment) and enhanced stress in various contexts (higher SSS reflects more stress). Results: Controlling for baseline cortisol values, children with ASD showed significantly higher cortisol levels than TD peers, in response to the PIP. Statistical analyses included t-tests and ANCOVA models to examine between-group differences in cortisol and play Pearson correlations to determine relations between cortisol, play, and questionnaire scores and moderation analyses to investigate interactions among variables. Parents completed questionnaires pertaining to child stress ( Stress Survey Schedule) and sensory sensitivity ( Short Sensory Profile). Salivary cortisol was collected before and after the 20 min PIP. Children participated in the peer interaction paradigm (PIP), an ecologically valid protocol that simulates real-world social interaction. Methods: Participants included 80 children (40 ASD) between 8 and 12 years. The current study investigated between-group differences in stress response to peer interaction, as well as the role of sensory sensitivity. Heightened sensory sensitivity may contribute to maladaptive patterns of stress and anxiety. Previous research shows that youth with ASD exhibit greater physiological stress response during peer interaction, compared to typically developing (TD) peers. 3Department of Psychology and Human Development, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, USAīackground: For many children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), social interactions can be stressful.2Vanderbilt Brain Institute, Neuroscience Graduate Program, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, USA.1Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, USA. Hanging above, around, and within the installation, like specters of the past, are the various incarnations of Warhol’s banana, the very bananas I sought to avoid. Brought into the context of The Warhol, a commercial juxtaposition emerges, from the mass-produced paint colors to the Walmart-bought banana trees. Estranged from its original context, the banana tree is transformed, much like the word “banana” as a pejorative word and “Chinatown Orange” as a harmless signifier for a color. The changed fruit has become useless for production but valuable for consumption. The modern banana trees, domesticated for commercial production, are lab-grown plants that produce seedless fruit. Tightly packed between the frames of the The Warhol Store’s windows, the orange banana trees operate as a conduit to highlight and subvert their own illogically provocative name as I reclaim the color through an equally absurd implementation. Little did I realize that the banana would return, albeit in a different form.īanana trees in The Warhol Store’s window.įor this installation, Hanging Fruit, I painted artificial banana trees Chinatown Orange. The interchangeability and arbitrary nature of the word can relate to all language. Chinatown Orange is language as image, nonrepresentational, and creates an open-ended reflection of society. As a bewildering signifier of an ethnic neighborhood, the color could be applied with greater range and implications. While I moved beyond the banana as a subject, Chinatown Orange remained, partially for the abstract nature of the color. Andy Warhol’s banana print, now an iconic image, proved to be a stubborn precedent to compete with. Furthermore, the banana seemed already exhausted in contemporary art. I eventually shifted away from the banana as my central image as I could only paint it for so long-I did not want to become known as the banana painter. Has Chinatown ever been orange? Has orange ever been Chinatown? The absurdity of assigning a color to an ethnic neighborhood matches the inanity of calling a person by the name of a fruit. This color, also known as 50YR 18/650, found in home improvement stores and sold by Glidden Paints, reveals the complexities and contradictions of naming. My use of the banana image coincided with my discovery of Chinatown Orange. Much like the ostensibly harmless food words, my paintings were innocuous studies of fruit-archetypal still-lifes. Large banana paintings developed from this notion of the banana as a label linked to my ethnicity. Zhiwan Cheung, The Impossibility of Home (production still), 2016, courtesy of the artist These labels are inherently accusatory, conveying the perception of racial betrayal, of not being true to one’s roots or race, of trying to “pass.” Of course, this phenomenon of using food as labels crosses many cultures and their use is usually pejorative: Asians as bananas or Twinkies, Native Americans as apples, African-Americans as Oreos, and coconuts as a catchall for any skin color that is a shade of brown. The “banana” is a vernacular label for Asian Americans-yellow on the outside and white on the inside-that describes those who either disguise their identity willfully or have fully assimilated to the mainstream culture. in The Warhol theater.Īndy Warhol’s banana print, immortalized by the Velvet Underground’s debut album cover, has been following me for quite some time in many guises. The entire lineup of modern graphics cards from both camps has had a bump in TDP this generation, and if the rumors are to be believed, the next generation will only exacerbate this problem.Īnd it is a problem.Rainbow Sparkles (Power efficient, <350W gaming load) While Jacob and I might not use our GPUs to their full potential, there’s no denying that the RTX 3090 and the RX 6950 XT are incredibly power-hungry and hot GPUs, and they’re not alone. The future looks warm Jacob Roach / Digital Trends The longer I play, the worse it gets, for both the card and me. My mATX case does not give this 6950 XT enough room for its triple fans to cool it effectively, so even if I do run it full tilt, I run into some thermal throttling after extended use. It also doesn’t sound comfortable, because just as gaming with a hot PC next to your legs or on your desk can make you hot and bothered, they can get really loud too. There might be a case of gaming with one of the best graphics cards pulling over 300W if you live somewhere tepid or it’s not the middle of summer, but when the temperatures rise outside and you want to hide inside playing games, switching on a miniature space heater to do it doesn’t feel very comfortable once temperatures start rising. This is something that both of us have had to deal with as our respective countries grapple with heat waves. “I just can’t handle the noise and heat, even if the card is capable of more.” “I’ve been limiting the frame rate with my 3090 for a while,” he said when I mentioned how I felt bad for making my RX 6950XT perform worse than it can. But according to him, it’s often a bit much and, frankly, more than he needs. His daily driver gaming PC has an RTX 3090 inside, and it’s stupendously powerful (although my card’s better). I would have been too ashamed to write about it myself if I hadn’t found out that my fellow DT writer and high-end GPU owner, Jacob Roach, is also a sacrilegious downclocker. I’m also aware that there are other ways around this problem without tamping down on the card’s performance, such as better system cooling, or gaming with the air conditioning on. I know this post reads like the most whiney of first-world problems - believe me, I’ve read it through multiple times before posting. Now, I can game in relative peace, and it takes far, far longer for my little home office to heat up. I have a near-silent 6950 XT that still performs better than almost any other GPU out there, and it didn’t require a custom cooler or heavy tweaking. The core clock now barely breaks 1,900MHz, and my Time Spy score isn’t quite as good, but I don’t care. Just as important? Fan speeds never went over 1,500 RPM, keeping the card cool and quiet enough that it only just registered over the whir of the system fans. Suddenly I had a card that even with a 4K Furmark run wasn’t going over 265W, with a maximum junction temperature of just 80 degrees. I could have manually adjusted the fan curves myself, but ultimately, setting the tuning profile to Quiet was enough.Ĭlock speeds dropped a little more, and fan speeds followed suit. The automated undervolting had a minor effect of its own, but a few extra RPM and a single-degree drop in temperatures wasn’t going to cut it. Next, I played with the settings in AMD’s Adrenaline driver application and made further headway. Image used with permission by copyright holder But it still wasn’t quite quiet enough for my sensibilities and temperature thresholds. Maybe there was a way to have my PCB cake and eat it too. With that, we were only hitting around 1700 RPM on the fans, and the junction temperatures dropped by around five degrees, resting under 100 at load for the first time since I’d gotten the card up and running. But the secondary Silent BIOS also lowers clock speeds and undervolts the GPU. The PowerColor Red Devil 6950 XT has a BIOS switch, ostensibly for backup purposes in case you brick one of them trying a heavy overclock. How could I continue to enjoy high frame rates and detail settings in games, but not have to listen to its fans hitting 2,200 RPM as soon as the game menu appears? The solution, it turns out, was the make the card run worse. It’s not necessarily the kind of GPU I would have bought myself, but now that I have one, what am I going to do, not use it?īut that was a very real prospect after a few days of retreating to headphones after the testing was done. When put in an mATX case it runs loud, too, even with a big cooler. It’s the same GPU as the 6900 XT but pushed to its limit, so of course, it runs hot.
